THE PRACTICE EXPEDITION!

Sorry we have been away for a while!

We have been recovering from our Practice expedition which was hard to say the least!

We will be going in to a little more depth in due course but so you guys have a quick overview of what we did while we were away we have written a few words...

Saturday- We packed up the van and sorted all the equipment then met the RBKC road safety team for a ride around the area and went to have a picnic in the park whilst learning key tops such as 'always keep your fingers over the breaks and keep your bum on the seat when you emergency stop! It was great to learn to bike ride on the roads and it made us so much more confident. Especially as we got to practice more with the trailers and baby seats.

Monday- Packed the van, with all the bikes and bags etc, planned our food menus, then went food shopping in Sainsburys with our tent partners- We went over budget :-/ Not sure how that happened! We drove to the first campsite singing all the way and keeping the kids entertained. To pitch the tents we took it in turns o watch the kids and pitch, we set up our sleeping bags and mats etc and tried to make ourselves feel at home! Then we cooked our amazing dinners

Tuesday- Practice cycling around and getting the hang of loading and unloading the van and setting up the trailers etc. We went back to the same campsite that night and cooked dinner. We also made tea and hot chocolate at watched the stars :-)
Wednesday- We went cycling for the day, got stuck in a few ditches, split up as a team (Naughty :-/) got really wet and fed up and nearly gave up all together! The kids were wet too as the trailers weren't as weather proof as we had hoped! We were all pretty miserable until we saw the amazing campsite we were staying in! (By amazing we don't mean 5* deluxe we just mean it had warm toilets and a clean shower!) It also had a dryer so the amazing staff stayed up late drying our clothes, shoes, sleeping bags and pjs!

Thursday- In the campsite this morning the kids played in the playground and it was the first time we saw them all play together really happily and it was lovely to watch, there was also a lake so some of us went for a walk to see the fishermen.  The night before we had a crisis meeting and decided to leave the bikes in the van for the day as we were having so many problems and the staff we going to try to find extra waterproof covers for the trailers. We planned a walking route to the beat and it was lovely. We all worked as a team and played with the kids, we sang and took in the lovely scenery. 2 of the kids had their bikes and rode the whole way (about 2 hours) and the other older kids walked the entire way! The little ones Reon and Savai, were in the trailers that were put together like buggies for the day. We had a great time at the beach playing with the kids and when we got back to the campsite we had a team meeting whilst learning how to repair a puncture.
We also had one 2 ones with the staff about how we think its all going and what we want to change for next time.

Friday- This was the best day as we were all so happy to be going home :-) We packed up, had a final cycle- the best yet as there wasn't many problems with the bikes and the moral was high. We experimented with saddling the kids, letting them run next to us, them riding etc and on the way home had a debrief in Mc Ds with hot chocolates and ice cream!

We will be adding a section on all the learnings we have taken from this expedition
(there is a long list!)
We will blog again soon!

Thanks for reading- Take a look at the quotes below!

The Change Together Team xx

'It rained the whole time. Even waterproofs weren't waterproof the way that rain was coming down! It made it really hard to bond as a team as we were confined to the tents trying to get the kids to sleep with the LOUD sound of rain on the tent. Looking back we could have made more effort to socialise and bond with the others but at the time we were so miserable and grumpy that we felt trapped!'

'It has reinforced the idea that I can do anything I really want to do as long as I stick it out and work hard. It inspires me to aspire for more.'

'The expedition was unlike all of the other ones I've done. We thought the bikes would make the expedition easier or at least manageable with the kids but there was always problems with the equipment so we were stoping and starting more than we were cycling!'

'I learnt to ride a bike without severely injuring anyone and I can put up a tent within 10 minutes'

Sponsored Bike Ride to Paris...

A supporter of Change Together, Simon Jones is helping to raise money for us by cycling 300 miles from London to Paris on Wednesday 7 September 2011.

A note from Simon...

Change Together are a group of young mums that are attempting to raise the £15,000 they need to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards by cycling across Holland on tandem bikes with their kids in trailers. If they are able to achieve this they will be the first people in Europe to take their children with them while successfully completing a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Expedition.

It's an unusual but extremely worthwhile cause and these young women have been working hard for the past few years volunteering in communities throughout London to support other young mums - building confidence, self-esteem and self-belief while inspiring them to change their lives for the better.

If you'd like to help me help the young mums at  Change Together then please donate online at: www.bikeridetoparis.co.uk

Thank you for your support and see you all for a drink when I get back.
Wish me luck (and good weather)
Simon

So far Simon has raised £125 for us! :-)

STOP PRESS!!

Take a look at the article on the DofE website that was written about us!! How exciting!

We are really hoping that as well as us benefiting from doing our award that we inspire and motivate other young mothers and other groups to do the award or follow their aspirations like we are doing.
Any press we can get can help to do this and also hopefully help us with our fundraising efforts.
We also have a meeting with a Journalist on Friday to answer a few questions as she wants to write an article on us. Cant wait!

:-)

Individual fundraising targets...

We have all set ourselves individual fundraising targets and together so far have raised over £600- Off to the bank this week to put it all in!

We are hoping to raise about £500 each and this will bring us so much closer to our target.

If you can make a donation please contact us, pay through the paypal  link below or put it in our community bank account-

Starbucks Youth Action application successful!!

Wahooooo!!!

Our application was successful and we are now on to Stage two!

2 of us are attending the training on the 14th July and will be filling out the next part and presenting it to the judges!

If successful our project will be promoted in Starbucks and the public will have the chance to vote for their favourite projects!

Wish us luck and let us know if you have any pointers!

See http://www.guardian.co.uk/starbucks-youth-action for more info about the scheme.

Starbucks Youth Action Fund applied for!

We have applied for a grant from Starbucks Youth Action for a share of the £1000 regional pot of money. To win we need to fit the following criteria:

a. Age 16-24
b. Location of project impact / where you live
c. Endorsement or support of youth worker
d. Willingness to come on a workshop
e. Makes a real difference to the local community

We fit all the criteria and have decided to apply for money to run a series of fundraising events such as fun-days etc in the Local Community, run by us with help from other young people in the borough.

If were successful in our initial bid we will be invited to attend a workshop where we will be given support and training to develop a second, more detailed application then we have to pitch our ideas to a panel of judges then 3-5 finalists will be picked.

Wish us Luck!!

WESTWAY COMMUNITY FESTIVAL...

Some of the team attended the Community festival at Westway Sports Centre in North Kensington on Sat 11th June 2011.

We had a stall and ran a raffle to raise money and had a donations bucket.

We managed to make £33 and had a great day!  :-)

Every little helps- Well done Girls!

xx

Funding update!

We have been successful in our application to the DofE Jubilee fund for £6000!!

This money will go towards paying for our practice expedition and necessary equipment.
We have to arrange a date to pick up the cheque and get our photo taken etc.

This is such great news and takes the pressure off as we were working so hard to come up with the money by October half term which is the only time we can do the practice.

We will still be working hard to raise the rest of the money so watch this space for details of other fundraising events coming up! xx

Bike taster day @ Richmond Park!

Richmond Park was a great day out!

We tested out a range of bikes and add ons for the kids buy riding round the fields and going on a 15 minute bike ride on the bike paths.

We tried tag alongs, trailers and child seats and all swapped round then had a picnic to decide what we all liked best.

Most of us loved the trailers and some liked the child seats but the larger kids were too heavy and it was scary to think the bike may fall over! The tag along was quite hard to turn with but Abdullah and Isiah loved it so we were thinking of swapping or taking in turns.

We had a picnic and a discussion about what the best bikes and attachments are to use on our expedition and  we are going to do some more research. We like the idea of having child seats and trailers on the bikes so the kids can alternate and not get too bored but were not sure this is possible.

We were originally planning to use tandem bikes but have now decided not too due to the cost, the weight of them and also the difficulty in attaching things to the back eg a tag a long or trailer.

Were going to look in to buying the trailers and baby seats as hiring them for the practice and full expeditions will be expensive and this was we can use them for other young mothers groups in the future.

All in all it was a brilliant day and we learnt so much. We bonded as a group and although the hire was quite expensive and came out of our fundraising money we think it was well worth while as were a lot more informed to make decisions about what we want now.

Thanks for reading and please see some pics below!
